Ingredients

For The Sauce:

  • 1.5 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 3 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1.5 tbsp Chinese cooking wine (sub with cooking sake, mirin or rice wine)
  • 3.5 tbsp dark soy sauce can sub with regular soy sauce but the color and taste of the beef won’t be the same
  • 3 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • ½ tsp white pepper

For The Stir Fry & Garnish:

  • 1.5 tbsp oil (vegetable, canola)
  • 3 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 750-800 grams lean beef mince
  • 3/4 cup spring onions
  • sesame seeds

Instructions

  • Place the sauce ingredients in a bowl and give it a good mix until combined.
  • Heat a wide pan over medium high heat and add oil. When oil is hot, saute garlic and onions. Cook until the onions turn soft and translucent.
  • Turn the heat up and add the beef; break it up as it cooks. Let it turn brown all over and continue to cook until the liquid is gone.
  • Pour in the sauce and stir to coat the beef. Let it simmer for a few minutes or until the sauce has been absorbed by the beef. (Be patient here and wait until all the sauce clings to the beef to get the optimum flavour).
  • Add spring onions and stir it through. Turn off the heat and garnish with sesame seeds, if desired.
